About our Program

In June 1983, a group of concerned citizens and local media team-up with law enforcement to form the County's first Crime Stoppers program.  Our local chapter was modeled after the original Crime Stoppers program in 1976 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  By following their lead, Greenville's Crime Stoppers chapter has become successful and rewarding.

The Crime Stoppers concept is relatively simple.  It is based on public awareness of local crimes, confidential information taken from callers, and rewards for tips that lead to arrests.  Approximately every three weeks, a local crime is broadcasted over the radio and television, and an article appears in local newspapers.  Callers are given confidential numbers that are the only traces of identification provided to both informants and officers.  No names are required or given.  If the information given leads to an arrest, the informant is given a cash reward from the Crime Stoppers organization.  This cash is picked up at a local bank with only numbers to indicate the recipient.

Since the beginning of the Greenville Crime Stoppers program, countless callers have given information about criminal activity in their area.  With this information, more than 9500 cases have been cleared, and more than 3300 individuals have been arrested.  These arrests have led to the recovery of more than one million dollars of stolen goods.  Even the availability of illegal drugs has been affected, since drugs valued at more than one million dollars were recovered.

Crime Stoppers of Greenville works.  Every day more and more calls are received, and more arrests are made.  Approximately $250,000 has been paid to local informants.  For more information on this rewarding program, or if you have any information on a crime of any kind, please call 23-CRIME.

Mission Statement
